It was actually developed as a code snippet for static sites, but evolved into a full blown wordpress plugin. However, in it's growth to this point, the version for static sites has become pretty outdated and useless overall. I do have plans to create another standalone version that would be up to date with the WordPress version, but that's a little while away, as there's a ton of development going on right now on the site itself (not just the plugin).
